When you think they are sleeping....check again!

It was a normal day.....I thought. Monday morning the day where all children dread coming to school. The day when children come in kicking, screaming and hanging on to mommy's skirts. Who wants to go to school after a long weekend? I must admit that sometimes teachers feel the same way. We wish to be at home under our comforters, reading a book and relaxing....who wouldn't?

This particular day was just like any other Monday. I sat with the preschool children during group time. We sang songs, discussed letter and number recognition, talked about body parts, nutritious foods, concepts, math...you know the usual. I then asked a crazy question, "What did you do over the weekend?" Why did I ask that? Hands went flying up in all directions....Oh, Oh, call me! Some children responded! So I called my buddy Terrence. Mrs. Fury...my mommy was screaming last night! I thought about that before I responded. In fear of this being some inappropriate conversation I stopped Terrence and said, "We'll talk about that later Terrence. Can anyone tell me if they went to a special place over the weekend?" Terrence then raised his hand again and before I could acknowledge him he began with his story again..."Then my mommy was like OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! THIS FEELS SOOOOOO! I immediately stopped him again trying not to laugh out loud. I now knew what he was talking about. Terrence raised his hand again....Mrs. Fury? Yes sweetie I responded wondering what was to come out of his mouth next. Would I have to call a parent conference for the entire class? Do you think my daddy was hurting my mommy? She kept yelling and screaming? Well honey I'm sure you are concerned about your mom. We will talk to her later so that we can put your mind at ease. I'm sure your daddy wasn't hurting mommy. Maybe they were watching a scary movie on television. This was the only response I could come up with at the spare of the moment.
The day had finally ended and Terrence didn't mention last night's events anymore. But I couldn't wait to get a hold of his mother. Terrence's mom came in looking all refreshed as if she had just gotten back from a long vacation....which made me laugh to myself even more.
Mrs. D....  I just wanted to bring something to your attention. I'm not going to mention in full what Terrence decided to discuss with all of us at group time today. But I do want to inform you that children are like sponges. Would you agree with me? Yes, like tape recorders Mrs. D responded. I'm so glad you understand this concept. Why what happened? Did Terrence use foul language today? No, not at all. He had a wonderful day today. He was helpful to the teacher and friends and I had not one issue with him today. (Maybe he was so overwhelmed by what he heard in your bedroom that he couldn't help but act right I thought.) I just wanted to remind you that when we think children are sleeping they are not. Huh, excuse me? Mrs. D I believe you and your husband was entertaining in grown up activities......Terrence was not sleeping. I gave Mrs. D a smirk and her skin complexion went from a coffee with cream complexion to a watered down tea! She even turned red! I hope I'm not making you feel uncomfortable. It's natural for children to be inquisitive about what's going on. My only concern now is some how could you please let him know that your husband was not trying to hurt you. Mrs. D giggled...still not in her normal complexion but she agreed to handle the situation.

Have you had a strange story like this interrupt your normal classroom activities? If so share it.
